Position Summary

The ED leads with a strong community ethic, empowering volunteers, collaborating with diverse stakeholders, and guiding BP’s strategic growth. This position manages day-to-day operations, cultivates funding opportunities, ensures program effectiveness, and represents BP publicly and professionally.

Key Responsibilities

Leadership & Strategic Direction

  • Guide the vision and execution of BP’s mission, in close collaboration with the Board of Directors.
  • Oversee the development and implementation of strategic initiatives that advance resilience and public preparedness.
  • Maintain BP’s role as a visible, credible, and connected force for community preparedness.
  • Support and implement board governance best practices; ensure timely, data-rich board reporting using existing instrumentation tools.

Operational Management

  • Supervise staff, contractors, and key volunteers across major program areas (e.g., Medical Reserve Corps, Hub Network, Tech Operations). This position currently has one paid contractor reporting to it, a 30 hour/week Program Director. Organizational chart: bainbridgeprepares.org/about .
  • Administer internal processes such as hiring, office management, insurance renewal, and payroll (including transition from contractor to salaried positions).
  • Manage contracts, agreements, and vendor relationships; oversee compliance with nonprofit laws and best practices.
  • Be available after hours when many of our volunteers are able to attend meetings and be available at a moment's notice during disasters to serve on the Emergency Operations Center team.

Program Development & Oversight

  • Ensure continued success and innovation in preparedness programming (e.g., hub trailer buildouts, drone operations, vaccination clinics, water storage deployment).
  • Evaluate program impact using both quantitative and qualitative metrics.
  • Monitor and maintain readiness for emerging challenges in coordination with city, county, state and federal partners.

Financial Management

  • Develop, manage, and report on the annual organizational budget; ensure fiscal integrity and sustainability.
  • Collaborate with the Treasurer to prepare quarterly financial statements.
  • Lead grant writing, fundraising campaigns, donor cultivation, and stewardship efforts.
  • Provide financial updates and fundraising summaries at Board meetings.

Fundraising & Communications

  • Spearhead major fundraising events (e.g., April Brunch), campaigns (e.g., One Call For All), and grant development.
  • Collaborate with community partners to maximize visibility and leverage aligned funding opportunities.
  • Maintain clear, compelling communications through newsletters, social media, and press.

Qualifications

  • Proven nonprofit or mission-driven leadership experience, preferably as an Executive Director or in a senior management role.
  • Demonstrated success in fundraising, grant writing, and financial oversight.
  • Strong background in disaster preparedness, emergency response, public health, or community organizing preferred.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills and comfort serving as a public spokesperson.
  • Skilled in building and maintaining positive relationships with the board, staff, volunteers, donors, and community partners.
  • Experience managing staff and large volunteer teams, particularly in a hybrid or distributed organizational model.
  • Highly organized, with a demonstrated ability to manage multiple complex priorities with clarity and calm.
  • Familiarity with Washington State nonprofit compliance and payroll systems is a plus.
  • Competency in collaborative tools such as Google Workspace, shared drives, Asana, and dashboards.

Compensation and Benefits

  • Salary commensurate with experience and the organization’s budgeted range of $90-115,000.
  • Benefits package includes flexible schedule, shared office access if desired (work from home acceptable), and a collaborative work culture on beautiful Bainbridge Island, Washington.
  • Professional development opportunities and an inspiring mission-oriented, values-driven workplace.
